Stronger by Design: Why Material Selection Sets Our Gearboxes Apart
At Sumitomo Drive Technologies, we know that the strength of a gearbox isn’t defined only by its design—it’s defined by the materials behind it. Choosing the right materials is one of the most important decisions we make, because it directly impacts performance, reliability, and efficiency.
As Cameron Washak, our Engineering Standards and Products General Manager, puts it: “A finished product is only as good as the materials selected.”
Why Materials Matter
From the initial design phase, our engineers prioritize material selection. Our objective is not only to ensure function but also to deliver lasting performance.
That means looking at factors like:
- Strength: High tensile, compressive, and shearing strength to handle heavy loads.
- Shock resistance: Impact strength for high-shock or stop-and-go applications.
- Durability: Fatigue strength to keep performance consistent over time.
- Protection: Corrosion resistance for harsh or demanding environments.
By weighing these factors, we ensure that every gearbox we produce is designed to deliver long-term reliability, even in the most demanding operating conditions.
Durability, Measured
We measure durability with a simple formula: mechanical strength divided by wear rate. The higher the ratio, the longer the component will perform without compromise. It’s a calculation that guides our engineering decisions and gives our customers the peace of mind that their gearbox is built for the long haul.
Innovation in Action: The Bevel Buddy Box®
A great example of this philosophy in action is the Bevel Buddy Box® gear unit.
The challenge was clear: traditional designs were larger and heavier than they needed to be. Our solution? A redesigned housing using cast iron, paired with other design improvements. The result was a more compact, lightweight gearbox that still meets demanding shock-loading requirements.
We validated the new design through strength calculations and rigorous physical testing to confirm consistent, reliable performance for our customers.
Better Gearboxes, Built Smarter
With all-steel rotating components and a compact bevel and helical gear mechanism, the Bevel Buddy Box® is just one example of how our focus on materials leads to smarter, stronger solutions. For our customers, it means gearboxes that are lighter, tougher, and more reliable. Our gearboxes simply keep operations running.
Industry Recognition
Our approach to material selection has caught the attention of the engineering community. Machine Design, a leading industry publication, recently featured Sumitomo Drive Technologies in an article on materials selection for mechanical components. The article highlighted how our commitment to using stronger, more durable materials results in gearboxes that are both lighter and tougher.
