Sumitomo Paramax® Featured in Longwall Mining Exhibition

The DBT America booth at the Longwall USA - 2003 International Exhibition and Conference set the stage for the Sumitomo Paramax 9000 Right Angle Industrial Speed Reducer.  As part of DBT America's impressive display, the 600 HP Paramax unit was featured on one of DBT's Belt Drive Systems, which was manufactured in their Houston, Pennsylvania facility.

DBT is a worldwide market leader in the design and manufacture of longwall mining equipment and captive-guided transport systems for underground mining.  The Alignment-Free Belt Conveyor Drive displayed at the show incorporates a Paramax unit that features a universal, steel housing.  This housing accommodates both right and left-hand applications, and its rugged exterior will withstand the rough handling associated with relocation to several panels. The universal housing is a cost-saving feature that allows reduced entry-way widths and spares consolidation.

The Longwall mining business remains vital to U.S. coal production. Although the total population dropped from 57 to 52 longwalls, several mines have announced improved production.  Sumitomo's Paramax was specified for this application by the end user of the system, one of the nation's largest coal producers.  It will ultimately be installed in the largest underground, longwall mine in the world, located in western Pennsylvania.

The Exhibition, sponsored by Coal Age, was held June 3-5 in Pittsburgh, and was the largest since Longwall USA 1998. More than 70 exhibitors used approximately 40,000 square feet to display equipment and services.   The five track technical program was dedicated to improving Longwall mining techniques.
