Celebrating 40 years with Carmody Company, Inc.

Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America (SMA) , one of 30 Sumitomo Power Transmission and Controls companies united under the Sumitomo Drive Technologies brand, has been a leader in the United States’ Power Transmission market for over 40 years.

In June of 1966, Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America began operations in a small 5,000 square feet facility in Carlstadt, New Jersey. The original 6 staff members handled all of the business functions and shipped about 100 units in that first year. Over the next 40 years, SMA grew rapidly to become one of the most dominant power transmission suppliers in the Americas with 9 facilities and over 300 employees. The SMA headquarters, located in Chesapeake, Virginia since 1988, symbolizes the excellent growth of the last 40 years.

One of the first manufacturing representative firms to develop a relationship with SMA was the Carmody Company, Inc. In June of 1967, Mr. William Carmody of the Carmody Company, Inc. (http://www.carmodycompany.com), a privately owned, family sales company, signed a contract to represent the new SMA “gearless” Cyclo Drive in the Pacific Northwest area of the USA. Carmody Company was responsible for Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. A prototype of the 50 Series Cyclo was sent to Mr. Carmody, and two of these units were sold to a customer with a sales expectation of 12 to 15 units per year. After five short years, the Cyclo became one of the largest product lines for Carmody Company.”

Today, Mr. Carmody’s sons, Tom and Dan, continue the 40-year business legacy with a much larger product offering from SMA. “Our relationship with Sumitomo has been the foundation of our growth and success, both as a company and as individual sales professional”, says Tom Carmody, President of Carmody Company. “We have a great team in the Pacific Northwest and we are part of a fantastic region which you helped to shape.
