Sumitomo Opens New Facility in Antofagasta, Chile
Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America (SMA) opened a new facility in Antofagasta, Chile on Monday, September 01, 2008. This new facility now joins Santiago in supporting the increasing demand for Sumitomo power transmission products in Chile. Antofagasta is 700 miles (1,130 km) north of Santiago and services the northern region of Chile, which has a large industrial base and serves as a central location for the South American mining industry.
“Located in La Negra, Antofagasta is very close to mining sites,” noted Antonio Monteiro, Regional Vice President of SMA Latin American Operations. “As part of Sumitomo’s growth plan in South America, Antofagasta is our second facility in Chile that will target the mining industries of Northern Chile and Southern Peru and will focus heavily on service capabilities. This initiative will come to meet our local customers’ needs for high-tech, fast and closer support that is so scarce in this region.”
