Meet Lindsey & Henry, Our Summer 2019 Interns!

Field of Study: Mathematics

I learned about this internship through Christopher Newport's employment/internship website called Handshake. I learned so much this summer about data analysis and VBA . These are very important and useful business and math skills. My first day in Sumitomo's Chesapeake Headquarters was a bit intimidating--as I didn’t know much about industrial machinery or gear motors. By the end of the day I knew almost TOO much about Sumitomo's Cyclo 6000 gear motor and other gearboxes. Over the few months of this internship, my favorite accomplishment was when I finished a Macro that automated a monthly data process and report. I was so proud to complete this AND it helped one of the Sumitomo employees.

Field of Study: Mechanical Engineering

I learned about this internship through Indeed and was elated to start! My first day went pretty smoothly. It was mostly about meeting the team and getting familiar with the facility. I’ve improved my CAD skills tremendously since working here, creating and designing parts I never thought I could. I’ve seen first-hand the day to day life and processes of how products are created, designed, marketed, sold, etc. I have had the opportunity to work on numerous engineering projects for the company during my time here collaborating with not only other engineers and designers but with people inside the shop too. That alone is experience you can’t replicate. It’s just been really cool to see in person how teamwork is really vital for improvement and growth in this company. The list could go on and on about what I’ve learned and experienced here, but I can say for sure though that I was not expecting this.

I know this may sound cliché but my favorite day was every day. I was just really grateful to be here and thankful that I was given this opportunity even though I had a really tight and hectic schedule with summer school and my other job. I really appreciate Lee and Sandeep for working around my schedule and allowing me to be flexible.

I must say though, I sure couldn’t help to smile and feel proud of myself when I would see a part/product that I helped create being actually used in real life. Or the first time I got my first official engineering technical drawing approved by the chief designer to be sent off for manufacturing. Just the thought and feeling of helping out and maybe making a difference was really exciting for me personally.  Thank you to my mentor Sandeep and everyone else who has helped and guided me along the way. This is just the start.
